Elon Musk and Mukesh Ambani Clash Over Starlink
Elon Musk took to X to ask if Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, is the “real boss of India” as he expressed frustration over the delays in regulatory approvals and security assessments for the launch of Starlink in the country.
Important Facts about the Controversy
• The Accusation: Musk accused unnamed “oligarchs” and later Mukesh Ambani, owner of India’s largest mobile operator Reliance Jio, of using market dominance and political influence to block Starlink’s commercial rollout.
• The Government's Response India's Ministry of Communications dismissed Musk’s claims as “baseless and misconceived.” It stated the satellite communications framework was “fair and non-discriminatory.”
• Current Starlink Status: Starlink and other competitors like Jio and OneWeb have got the basic operational license but are yet to get final security clearances and spectrum assignment from the Indian government for a full commercial launch.
• Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi commented on the exchange with a critical remark about corporate influence, and Musk replied that the situation was “troubling”. Musk's comments have not been publicly responded to by Reliance Industries and Ambani
